Decorating A Long And Narrow Living Room

A living room can come in many different sizes. Not all living rooms are a perfect square and when it is not, it may be too difficult to decorate. If you have a long and narrow living room, you may be finding it difficult to create the right look. No matter what you try, it doesn't seem to look balanced. There are several reasons why this may be happening. It could be because you are placing too much of an emphasis on one direction or it could be that the color you are using is simply not helping the room look larger. Here are a few decorating tips when you are decorating a long and narrow living room.

Where Is Your Focal Point?

You probably place to focal point on the main wall where your sofa is. The focal point should be on the side wall, either side. Place a fireplace, artwork, or even a television on the side wall and you will balance out the room. If you place anything on the other walls, you will see that your room will only look longer, no matter what you try.

The Overall Look

The room doesn't need only one overall look. You can have different areas in the room that can be decorated differently. This will also help the room to look smaller. Make a sitting area, an area to sit in front of the fire, a desk and chair, and a place to sit and read. Creating different areas can help the room look smaller. Be creative and think about the needs of the family as a whole. If no one is usually in this room, you may be able to decorate it all yourself.

Area Rugs

Remember to count the furniture. Since the living room furniture is big and bulky, you want to make sure that you count this too.

Create a sketch of your room and use a pencil to color in your furniture arrangement or take a few pictures of the room and cut out the furniture that you actually want to put in the room. When you map it out, this will help you create the look that you want.
