Affordable Living Room Decorating Ideas For Homeowners

Not everyone has an unlimited budget when it comes to decorating his, or her living room, thus affordable living room decorating is an important thing to think about. Many people's living rooms are a direct reflection of their financial difficulties, often comprised of hand me downs, and thrift furniture. Not only is this not a great design element, it is completely unavoidable if one has a grander vision.

Embrace the shabby chic design element that allows for vintage to be cool. Some of the most respected furniture design companies spend much of their budget creating vintage looking furniture. When considering affordable living room decorating it is necessary to look at this trend, and embrace it while going for the originals.

Instead of going to the thrift shop, try looking at an antique auction or antique store instead. Many think that the word antique signifies a high price tag, when in fact most antiques are as cheap as what a piece of furniture would be at a thrift store. Just as the retail market has general rates, so does the resale market. This means that a beautiful antique sofa or table at an antique is probably as cheap, as a dirty couch found at a thrift store. By looking for antiques you can find not only beautiful affordable living room decorating pieces, but you can also find sets easier.

Create a must have list, and start at the top when putting an affordable living room decorating plan in action. There should be one or two pieces that are the focal points of your affordable living room decorating effort, and thus try to obtain those first, and build around them. By considering this in your affordable living room decorating plan, you will be automatically thinking about an actual design, what most people forget to do when they shop for affordable furniture. Stop thinking in terms of price, and instead think in terms of design, and then in terms of price.

Go with a simple, minimalist look to save money. While minimalists come from all economic walks of life, it is the most affordable way to make an affordable living room decorating plan look chic. Simply define your needs in terms of people that will be spending time in your living room, and go off to find the minimum that they need. Space the furniture, and tables out, and you should have an affordable living room design that the entire family will appreciate.

Quick Way to Lose Weight - The 2 Best Exercises to Lose Weight Fast Without Leaving Your Home

Here's a quick way to lose weight using the 2 best exercises to lose weight fast without having to leave your home. Now, before you read on... if you don't like to exercise or want to lose weight just dieting or popping some amazing weight loss pills, then this article isn't for you.

This article is for those who aren't afraid to put a little time into improving their body... and I do mean "A LITTLE TIME".

Exercises to Lose Weight Fast

1. Hindu Squats

You may not know of this version of squats because it's not really for muscle building, it's for fat loss. And it does it's job REALLY REALLY fast.

There isn't much to explain on how to do these... just squat up and down fast. You only use your body as weight, no barbells. So you can do this at home.

I'll give you 1 tip to make this really effective... while squatting down for each repetition, be sure to touch your fingers to the ground. Why? Because this makes sure you don't cheat because it proves you went down far enough in the squat.

To start with, time yourself for 1 minute and do as many as you can in that minute. You want to average about 20 squats a minute... yeah they're fast!

Once you can do 20 in 1 minute, move up to doing 40 in 2 minutes. And so on. 60 in 3 minutes. 80 in 4 minutes. 100 in 5 minutes.

Once you get to 100 in 5 minutes, try doing it twice a day for 5 minutes.

2. Jump on a mini-trampoline

I'll tell you why I think so highly of this exercise. First, because it works. But besides that, because you're allowed to stay home and do this. This saves you tons of time and money. The other main point you should know about this is that if you do it for 1-2 minutes at a time throughout the day... that increases your metabolism a lot faster than just doing 1 big 20-40 minute workout all at once.

So all you do is use it for 1-2 minutes whenever you can spare the time. Don't stress out about having to schedule doing these. Just do them when you can.

The 1-2 minutes will add up to over 20 by the end of the day as long as you keep the mini-trampoline somewhere that you can see it all the time... like your living room. Keep it visible so you don't forget about it.

So if you want a quick way to lose weight, those are 2 of the best exercises to lose weight fast with.

In the War for Talent, Employers Are Their Own Worst Enemy

The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that there will be 10 million more open positions than available workers in 2010, and the former Employment Policy Foundation (EPF) projects that this gap will grow to 35 million by 2030. The EPF also projected occupations requiring post secondary training or a college degree will increase to 65 percent by 2030. Currently, only 38 percent of the American labor force has a two year degree or higher. With recent college educational attainment rates at about 28 percent (US Census Bureau, 2003), the gap between knowledge worker demand and supply will widen. This fact coupled with the projected loss of educated senior leaders due to baby boomer retirement (US Bureau of Labor Statistics forecast is that the five hundred largest employers will lose 50% of their senior leaders in the next five years) makes it highly likely that US companies will be facing a "War for Talent".

There is mounting evidence that companies are already feeling the talent crunch today. A recent survey of staffing directors conducted by Monster and Development Dimensions International reported that these professionals overwhelmingly reported that competition for talent was strong and the war for talent is getting increasingly hotter.

As the "War for Talent" heats up, some employers are employing effective battle tactics while too many others are engaging in hiring practices that are dooming them to a fate of mediocrity or even worse, extinction. While there are numerous habits that could be identified as dysfunctional, four of the most common hiring habits leading to battlefield casualties include:

  • Overly restrictive hiring criteria

  • Subjective selection procedures

  • Slow speed in acting on candidates

  • Poor candidate interviewing experience

This paper will explore each of these habits and suggest alternative strategies for success.

1. Overly Restrictive Hiring Practices

A recent feature on the Information Technology blog, www.codinghorror.com, published an email that was received from Andrew Stuart of the Australian recruiting firm Flat Rate Recruitment. It read:

"I had a client building an advanced network security application designed to prevent denial of service attacks. I sent them person after person and they kept knocking them back. The reason was almost always because the person didn't have enough low level

TCP/IP coding experience. The people I sent had done things like design and develop operating systems, advanced memory managers and other highly sophisticated applications. But my client wasn't interested. They required previous hands on experience coding low level TCP/IP. Eventually I got an application from a very bright software engineer who almost single-handedly wrote an Amiga emulator, but had little or no experience doing low level TCP/IP coding.

I told the client, "I have a great guy here who has no experience doing low level TCP/IP coding and I think you should hire him." They were extremely skeptical. I pushed hard to get an interview. "Look, this guy is a superb software engineer who doesn't have low level TCP/IP coding experience now, but if you employ him, within 3-6 months you will have a superb software engineer who does have low level TCP/IP coding experience."

As you might expect, the company took a gamble and sure enough, the candidate ended up being the smartest and most capable programmer in the company. This little anecdote illustrates the importance of learning ability in job success. As a retail executive recently related, "Retail industry knowledge is not rocket science. I can teach retail knowledge. What I can't teach is natural leadership. Give me proven strong leaders and I will quickly make them into strong retail leaders."

The Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection caution against selection on the basis of knowledge, skills, or ability learned in a brief orientation period. While the definition of what constitutes a brief period is left somewhat vague, the logic is clear: Selection requirements should focus on those qualities or experiences that are critical for candidates to possess at time of hire and not knowledge, skills, or ability that can be learned in a reasonable amount of time. It is not surprising that there is considerable research showing that mental ability or learning ability is the single most important predictor of job success (Scmidt et al). Smart and passionate candidates quickly close transient experience and knowledge gaps and add significant long term value to the organization.

In addition to learning ability and passion, employers too often focus on finding individuals that perfectly match a long list of overly constraining requirements that are grounded in faulty logic. Typically, these requirements are not listed on a position description but are determined through discussions with the recruiter or hiring manager or learned through the process of introducing candidates for open opportunities. Let's consider the following overly constraining requirements (real examples) and their underlying assumptions and implications:

International Consulting Company requirement - "candidates must have lived and worked in a foreign country". Assumption: Living and working in a foreign country is predictive of an individual's appreciation of cultural differences and their business impact as well as being predictive of the candidate's ability to operate in a variety of cultures successfully.

Logical Flaw - the fact that I have lived and worked in another country does not necessarily indicate that I was either successful or enjoyed the experience. Being

successful in a single culture (e.g., France) does not necessarily translate into success in another culture (e.g., China). Result - Individuals who have traveled extensively or have a true passion for international work and are willing to be students of different cultures will be excluded from consideration.

Corporate Procurement Specialist Requirement - "candidates with manufacturing procurement experience will not be considered." Assumption: Procurement specialist dealing with supply chain vendors in a manufacturing environment will not be properly equipped or familiar with the nuances of how to handle vendors supplying a corporate environment.

Logical Flaw - manufacturing procurement specialists also supply the desks, paper, equipment, etc. for the office environment. Core skills of vendor negotiation, analysis of alternative sources, cost reduction strategies, and inventory management are highly transferrable. Result - Highly skilled procurement specialists that would likely be extremely successful in the role are not even considered.

Plant HR Generalist Requirement - candidates who have had corporate experience or attained titles of HR Director or above will not be considered. Assumption: Individuals who have "tasted corporate life or higher level work responsibilities would not be satisfied with the demands and realities of plant HR challenges.

Logical Flaw - Corporate roles are not always valued more than plant positions. There are individuals who prefer the pace and demands of a plant environment to a much greater extent than a corporate environment. Result - Individuals with both plant and corporate experience but with a strong passion for plant environments will be overlooked.

2. Subjective Selection Procedures

It is amazing that companies take a highly structured and data driven approach to making capital or other strategic investments but rely frequently on "gut feel" for making strategic talent selection decisions. In the previously cited DDI and Monster survey,

nearly half the staffing directors admitted that gut instinct and intuition play an important role in hiring. Selection systems without tests and assessments often lack critical information that could turn a "maybe" into a clear "yes" or "no."

Not only does the absence of testing and assessment information increase the probability of subjective selection decision-making, the use of unstructured interviewing also promotes gut instinct decisions. In a recent discussion with a hiring manager, the manager admitted that he really did not know how to conduct a professional interview. He indicated that he liked to conduct a more casual conversation and look for any indications of characteristics that might prove troubling. In his words, he was looking for

the "right vibe" and he would know it when he saw it. Evidentially it was a scarce quality since he conducted close to 100 interviews before making a final selection decision.

In another experience with a hiring manager, a candidate was rejected on the basis of a single question. The question was, "how many people have you terminated?". While the candidate did in fact have experience with under performers and had conducted terminations, it was not enough in the hiring manager's eyes. The hiring manager felt that a higher rate of terminations would indicate that the candidate could lead a diverse work force and make tough performance decisions. It is just as likely that a high termination rate could indicate that the candidate had poor coaching and talent development skills.

The lack of structure in an interview with interview questions clearly tied to competency requirements opens the door for interviewer stereotypes to surface. Early in my career, I was a classification counselor in a state correctional system. Part of the job was to make custody recommendations for prisoners entering the state system. The recommendation was made by a panel of three individuals who represented different perspectives including field leadership. The panel membership varied. On one occasion, a particular field captain was selected to participate in the custody discussions. It soon became apparent that he applied certain stereotypes in evaluating prisoners as he indicated that he felt that small ears close to the head was a possible indication of a high security risk. While this is an extreme example, it illustrates how individual stereotypes can affect judgment.

There are numerous research articles on the deleterious effects of different types of rating errors and rater biases on rating accuracy. As a single example, a study by Marlowe et al.(1996) found that both attractiveness and gender contributed to rater bias. Highly attractive individuals were rated higher than less attractive individuals and males were rated higher than females.

Clearly, objective testing and assessment information coupled with structured behavioral interviewing leads to superior, more informed selection decision-making.

3. Slow Speed in Acting on Candidates

In computing the true costs associated with hiring, it is necessary to consider the lost productivity associated with having the position vacant. One would think that this true cost would motivate employers to act quickly on evaluating candidates for positions. However, the speed of candidate reviews is too often very, very slow. This slowness manifests itself at each stage of the process...slow to review initial candidates, slow to conduct phone screens, slow to get them into initial interviews, and slow to conduct deep selection steps.

The cause of this slowness is most frequently associated with heavy workload pressures and overly booked calendars. The paradox is that faster time to fill metrics would help

alleviate workload pressures for both HR and the hiring manager. A shared sense of priority and an intelligent and organized approach to executing selection steps also eliminates the likelihood that high quality candidates will abandon interest and accept employment with a potential competitor. Losing high quality candidates at the end of a selection process results in even greater recruitment costs.

Another rationalization is that a slow hiring process is reflective of careful and deliberate selection decision-making. However, the view from the external perspective of a job candidate is exactly the opposite. Overly slow or involved selection is more likely seen as being reflective of a disorganized and inconsiderate organization that does not view talent as a priority. Slow hiring processes can quickly erode an organization's employment brand and affect their ability to attract good talent on an ongoing basis.

4. Poor Candidate Experiences

In addition to a slow selection process, a poor interview experience can also contribute to a company's negative employment brand. Research has shown that interviewer qualities such as warmth, sincerity, empathy, and listening skills as well as interviewer behaviors such as question style, invasiveness, and job knowledge both impact applicant reactions (Harris & Fink, 1987). Other research suggests that negative applicant reactions can also affect an applicant's attraction to a job opportunity and their desire to pursue employment with the organization (Ralston & Brady, 1994).

Other factors can affect candidate reactions. Candidates react less favorably to interviews conducted by phone than those conducted face to face (Silvester, Anderson, Haddleton, Cunningham-Snell, & Gibb, 1999). Poor pre and post interview communications, promptness of the interviewer, and interview length could also impact a candidate's reactions.

The question is: In a time of scarce talent, why would you want to irritate quality candidates?

Strategies for Success

These four bad habits can easily be corrected. The first step is to take a position of recruiting quality talent rather than individuals that have performed the exact same position in the exact same industry and faced the exact same challenges. This overly narrow strategy brings tremendous talent supply constraints and ignores the value of passion, ability to learn, and the importance of overall leadership qualities. There is also the added advantage of injecting new perspectives and thinking into the organization by bringing in individuals with diverse backgrounds.

The second step is to utilize testing and assessment information to increase your confidence and predictive accuracy that a candidate can successfully perform the job. These methods can be used to identify individuals that possess true leadership talent. An individual with a high level of talent but a slightly non-traditional background (e.g.,

comes from a different industry) could well make a much greater contribution than an individual that has performed the exact same job in the same industry but possesses modest leadership talent. The third step is to adopt structured behavioral interviewing and train your interviewers to conduct a professional, job relevant interview. Structured behavioral interviews will increase your predictive accuracy and increase the likelihood that candidates will form a positive impression of the organization and its opportunities.

The final step is to take a close look at your selection process and key metrics. Shortening "time to fill" will help ensure that you do not lose quality candidates to other organizations and will positively affect your overall "cost of hire". Better organization and scheduling of talent selection components (initial review, screening, interviewing, testing, etc.) should have a very positive impact on time as well as candidate reactions.

These four steps go a long way in arming an organization to win the War for Talent.

So You Got a New Digital SLR? Here Are a Bunch of Tips on How to Get the Most Out of It!

Here are a bunch of tips and ideas for you to learn more about your new Digital SLR camera and make better images!

1. Shutter Priority. Use this mode to control the camera's shutter speed. It's best used in these situations: a) Dark rooms, such as auditoriums, when you need to stop motion but can't use flash; b) Settings where you want to blur movement, such as a mountain stream, and c) Settings where you want to stop fast motion, such as an insect wings or water droplet.

To learn about this, set your camera to Shutter priority and experiment with various things that move. You'll be able to see the difference in the motion of the subject by varying the speed and letting the camera do the rest of the exposure settings.

2. Aperture Priority. Use this mode to control the camera/lens aperture. Often this is used to force a "wide open" shutter, which will focus your subjects but blur the background, or a "stopped down" shutter, used to put every item in the viewfinder in sharp focus.

To learn about this, experiment with a couple of staged "still life" images and vary the aperture or "f-stop" from wide apertures such as f/3.5 (wide opening), to small apertures such as f/8 or f/11. Let the camera figure out the rest of the settings, and then compare the images to see how the sharpness of the background changes as the f-stop gets smaller.

3. ISO settings. The ISO is a measure of the sensitivity of the image sensor. Similar to the different film speeds of the film cameras, you can vary the ISO to get specific results. Remember that the smaller ISO number means better quality but less light. So if you want the sharpest, best image in bright daylight, ISO 50-100 may be your best setting. Shooting in low light? Maybe ISO 800, 1600, 3200 or higher would work for you. You'll get exposures with more noise in them, but the subject movement will be minimized.

To learn about this, Change your ISO out of Automatic, to 100, choose Aperture Priority of around f/5.6, and then take a series of shots in a somewhat dark setting, such as an indoor room out of sunlight. Then change ISO from 100 to 200, 400, 800 and as high as your camera will go. You'll find the camera choosing faster and faster shutter speeds, but the images will start to become noisy.

4. Macro mode. Your camera has at least one removable lens. It has a minimum focusing distance, meaning that it can't focus sharply on images closer than that.

To learn about this, check in your lens manual or look up online the minimum focus distance and experiment with some close-up imagery. Some suggestions: pull out some kitchen items like grains or beans and do a close-up. Vary the f-stop and camera angle to get some of the material sharply in focus and some blurred. Try it with office supplies, pets, you name it. The key is to play with the "world of the small".

5. People perspective. It's not intuitive, but the best images of people may be taken at the farthest end of your zoom lens. When you use the wide angle setting, you have to approach your subject and in doing so, your lens will distort the closest features, such as the nose. By stepping back and zooming in, you place the subject's features in more of the same distance, so distortion is minimized.

To learn about this, get a cooperative subject and make a series of head and half-body shots in the full zoom range of your lens, starting with wide angle, and stepping back as you zoom in to keep roughly the same body proportions. Then look at the series of images and see if you can detect the difference between wide/close faces and zoom/far faces.

6. Monopod. This handy and inexpensive device will let you create many good images in lower light. It has a thread that connects to the bottom of your SLR. Use lt like a walking stick when out and about, but put the camera on if your shutter speed is below around 1/250 second, and it will keep your camer from moving too much.

To learn about this, get a monopod and experiment with some hand held shots, then put the camera on the stick and take the same images. It works!

7. Anti-shake. It's called many things - Anti-shake, VR (Vibration Reduction), and IS (Image Stabilization) to name a few. Some cameras have it on the body (Sony), and others in the lenses (Canon, Nikon). Some don't have this at all. The trick is that the camera/lens compensates for some amount of camera motion from your holding it, allowing you to get sharp images at much lower speeds.

To learn about this, find out how to turn it on (if you have it), and experiment with hand held images with it on and off. Note that this feature is not useful if your camera is on a tripod.

8. Night Images. If you can keep the camera very still, you can get some amazing images after dark. Usually you use a tripod and sometimes a cable release or a timer release to keep the shutter open and minimize the vibration from the camera's mirror.

To learn about this, put your camera on a tripod after dark and shoot your neighborhood or indoors at various exposure times. Take that next birthday photo only using candle-light, or try "light painting", where you illuminate part of your set with white or colored lights for a creepy effect.

9. Reflectors. You can take some wonderful natural light shots, but sometimes the contrast from bright side to dark side is too high, leading to blown out highlights or black shadows. An external reflector can help to smooth out the contrast and provide highlights.

To learn about this, make a cheap reflector from a flat white object such as foamboard, white cardboard or a ceiling tile. place it to the opposite side of your subject from the bright light source, and let it reflect some of that bright light back on the subject to lighten the shadows. Try another one to divert light from the back or side to provide highlights for hair or the back/side of a subject. Experiment with "negative light", where you place black objects near the subject to reduce the level of light on that side of the subject.

10. Put it all together. Go through these exercises and then build an assignment for yourself. Try to set up and photograph some of these things to show your knowledge and skills with your SLR:

A. Compose a still life with nice side light and narrow depth of field and clean background. Try a fruit basket.

B. Compose a portrait with a subject lit nicely from window light, with and without fill light.

C. Photograph a piece of fruit falling into a container of water. Provide enough light and a short enough shutter to capture water droplets.

D. Take an image of a moving person or animal where the subject is frozen.

E. Take an image of a person or animal where the subject or background is blurred.

F. Compose a portrait in or of your residence and shoot it after dark.

Note that I didn't mention that little flash on the top of your camera. I think of it like a fire extinguisher - use only in emergency! The camera flash will do more to harm your images than it will do to help. Learn to work without it. If you really want to use flash, consider a separate flash unit, especially one that you can remove from your camera and fire from other locations.

With a little constructive play, you can learn a lot about photography, improve your composition and shooting skills, and create some great art!

WCCO Feature on Showhomes

Home Managers Could Help Your Home Sell Faster Reporting Darcy Pohland MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― www.showhomesminneapolis.com the housing market in a slump, home sellers are looking for new ways to stand out and some are turning to house managers to transform their properties. House managers basically take staging to a whole new level, by turning ordinary homes into model homes. Realtor Mike Strand showed off a Minneapolis townhouse that has three bedrooms, four bathrooms and costs $600000. "This home went on the market in late August, around Labor Day, so it's been on for about four months," he said. For most of that time, the house has been empty. "While we can see all the promises that this property holds, buyers have to have a little help envisioning themselves in the property," Strand said. Realtors decided to give potential buyers a better look by hiring a home manager to take the place from stark to show-stopping. "We create a model home atmosphere," said Showhomes owner Cindy Montgomery. "That manager will live in the property, they maintain the property and keep the home in a show-to-sell condition seven days a week, 12 hours a day." "This is my third move in three months," said home manager Jamie Shock. In the past five days, Showhomes redesigned the living room of the townhouse, adding paint and the home manager's furniture and accessories. "Sometimes you have to purchase more, sometimes you don't and sometimes you have exactly what it needs to fit the property ...

Micromaisonette time lapse

www.environastudio.com.au. the two great challenges facing residential design are sustainability and affordability. doing more with less can address both issues: smaller will be more efficient and also more cost effective. one way forward will be to build compact and succinct. this is a prototype of a 15sqm apartment: a micro maisonette, a functional dwelling in the space of a 4x3m room. the furniture is full size, arranged so that it can be folded away, thus one space can be a kitchen, living room, dining room, bedroom, workspace etc adaptable, depending on the function required. this is a full scale prototype model, made to test ideas. It is constructed from a fully recyclable cardboard product xanita xb. we anticipate that the future micro maisonette would be made from materials using this core element, clad with sustainable linings such as laminates, no voc mdf and plywood. this is an exercise in compact living, suitable for gen y, backpackers, campus accommodation etc creating a flexible dwelling, socially relevant with a reduced footprint.

Turn on Your Anti-Aging Gene and Increase the Absorption Rate Using Life Ionized Water

There are several ways to reverse the aging process or at least slow it down to a crawl. One of the ways to do this is to turn on your "Sirtuins". Sirtuins who? Sirtuins are a family of genes know as silent information regulator proteins. New research uncovered this gene that can increase life-spans dramatically, in fact up to 100% in one study. All living things carry it including humans. The best thing about it is certain foods can activate it or turn it on.

This "longevity gene" first was discovered about 20 years ago. Researchers found if you starve mice, and then give them a nutritionally balanced diet with very few calories, their life-spans increased dramatically. Later studies showed this was not limited to mice alone but single cell organisms to plants an animals.

The genes causing this mysterious action are sirtuins. Sirtuins kick in under conditions of severe stress. They transmit signals to every cell in your body that literally cancel out the effects of aging. The processes leading to cell death slows to a crawl, buying your body more time. However, since your body is being attacked in other ways like oxidation from an over acidic internal body environment you will never see the slowing of aging.

Now your probably saying to yourself, "I'm going to have to starve myself to live longer!" The answer to that is "NO", your not going to have to starve yourself. In fact, it's not as painful as you may think! It does require a slight change in your nutritional uptake ie. the types of foods and drinks you place into your body.

Scientists were stumped for years on how to "turn on" the sirtuin genes without starving and "turn off" the switch on aging. This is where organic foods and good clean alkalized ionized water comes in. Let's take them one at a time will start with organic foods which contain a natural compound, unleashing the anti-aging power of sirtuins as effectively as calorie restriction. It's called Resveratrol.

Resveratrol can be found in higher levels in plums, grapes, blueberries and cranberries. Other plants also make smaller amounts. Its power to enhance and prolong your life goes beyond anti-aging. Years of research has shown that resveratrol boosts heart health, combats cancer, ramps up energy levels, limits inflammation that causes arthritis, and benefits a number of major organs, including the heart, liver, and pancreas. It also has been shown to have the remarkable capacity to halt cell "malfunctions" that can lethal, like tumor generation.

There is actually two kinds of resveratrol, "cis-" and "trans-resveratrol." It's the second kind appears to be the most beneficial.

Resveratrol may also turn out to be for humans what spinach was for Popeye. In one study, it turned mice into Mighty Mice, granting them extraordinary strength and stamina. Once fed resveratrol, they ramped up their aerobic capacity, lengthened their running time, and burned more oxygen. Researchers also noticed that resveratrol enhanced their muscles' ability to turn fuel into energy.

Resveratrol taps into your body's natural, life-giving force, unleashing vitality, energy, strength, and stamina. It can literally add years to your life.

The problem is how to get enough of it.

Majority of all the experiments conducted used quantities of resveratrol well beyond what you'd be able to get from drinking a lot of wine or eating plums all day. So this is a case where supplements are a better option. They're inexpensive and safe. You can find them in health food stores or on line. I recommend around taking 10 mg per day.

Since resveratrol is a potent antioxidant would it not make sense to increase it's absorption and increase it's potency 10 fold? The easiest way and most effective way is to take your resveratrol with LIFE giving alkaline ionized water which you can create from your own tap water.

The amazing thing about using LIFE alkaline ionized water is in the process of creating this water through electrolysis. The use of a home water filtration system that not only filters the water but adjusts the pH as well. In addition, the unit micro-clusters the water. Large 15-molecule clusters of water are reduced to 5- to 6-molecule clusters. This process actually makes water "wetter," allowing better hydration and delivery of nutrients to the cells. There is another positive aspect to the function of drinking alkaline ionized water: They create negative ions, which are natural anti-oxidants. That's right. Your water can help neutralize free radicals and slow down the aging process as well!

Another benefit that most individuals are not aware of is we start to lose bicarbonates in our blood, when your about 45 years old. When this happens we begin to age. In order to stop aging and maintain good health is to recharge bicarbonates in the blood which can easily accomplished with the use of alkaline ionized water. A triple threat to reverse aging and getting our health back at the same time.

Dr. Ron Sakamoto has been helping people with their health challenges for the past 18 years on how to allow their own body to repair itself through the use of raw foods and making their body more alkaline. He has been helping people lose weight, reverse aging, and staying healthy without the use of pills, diets, nips or tucks. By using something so basic but more powerful then any food or supplement. Ethnic Home Design Ideas for Flooring

While designing a home one of the most critical parameter to be considered is the floor. The home design ideas for the floors have come up a long way and the traditional style floors are now being modified. People these days are now not only concerned with the durability but also need looks for their home floors.

Home Design Ideas and Tips for Floors

* Before installing one need to set the budget because there are floorings that are costly but some economical type floor ideas are also available. Depending on the amount of investment the type of fabric and installing charges can be easily judged.

* Another thing to be considered is the type and material to be used. People have been found using wood, tiles, granites, marbles, ceramics and many other fabrics for different sections of their home.

Popular home design ideas for the floors include multiple construction materials. The commonly installed floorings include:

* Hardwood type floors are one of those which are always in fashion. This kind of floor makes use of various types of hardwoods like oak, pine, cherry, maple, walnut and cinnamon wood. They are not only durable but also add a class and elegance to the home. Depending on the durability of different types they are being installed in bedrooms, living rooms, lobbies and even in kitchens and bathrooms.

* Installing the vinyl type floorings are another great flooring idea. Resilient type floors are not only being used for kitchens and bathrooms for their looks but also for the fact they are better in those humid conditions. The availability of these vinyl floorings in colors and patterns is making them popular world wide.

* Simple home design ideas of laying the granite floors is the latest trend. They are mostly being laid in darker shades of black in the living and bedroom room areas, but to give more spacious look white granite is an excellent option. Glossy and shimmery type granites are being laid in different parts to give a more elegant feel.

* Tiles are also a good alternative whenever an individual needs to install them in bedroom and living room. The ease of cleaning the ceramic tiles is making them a great flooring material.

* Carpets are another substitute to those expensive floorings. Lying down of carpets is not a new thing but is in practice since ages. They give a traditional look to the area alongside makes the place look beautiful due to their designing and color patterns. Laminating floors with various protective coverings will not only increase their durability but would also help in easy maintenance.

For excellent home design ideas people can get the best material from the market which can last longer and help to reflect a unique taste of the homeowners.

Design Tips for a Spacious and Family-friendly Living Room

The living room is such an important room of the house. This is where you receive your guests. These are some of my ideas for decorating the living room. In fact, the trend these days is to have a large room where all the different common activities like dining, working, playing, studying, TV watching can be done altogether. The idea is to get premium use of space available. Ideally, these different functions can be separated by dividing the areas with cabinets, shelves or partition. Another trick is to change the floor covering too. The living room is a busy area so it is crucial to allow wide pathways for easy entry into and out of the living room. You want to be practical too. Get a carpet that is easy to clean and maintain. I recommend getting leather sofa sets as they are easy to maintain.

You want furniture to be flexible and multi functional too. Look for tables with storage space. Instead of leaving your keys, wallets and mobile phone on the table you can keep them in the drawers. It prevents cluttering. Look for sofas and couches which have drawers to keep your stuff. Choose storage chests that can used as tables, storage or seating. Save space by using storage units that come with sliding doors. Storage units with doors or drawers require space when you open the cabinet doors or drawers. Create the illusion of space by getting small furniture which makes the living room much bigger. Put decorative items such as books on open storage shelves, glass cabinets and tables. Make sure they are arranged in a neat and clean manner as they are visible. Non decorative and unsightly items should be stored in closed storage units like cupboard and chest with drawers. Find light and versatile furniture which is easy to move around.

For example, consider using steel and plastic chairs instead of wooden chairs. Look out for stools which are smaller and are stackable too. Are children playing and also studying in this area? Get them open storage boxes and baskets to keep their toys and books in them. What else can you do to make cleaning of the living room easier? Simple, throw away all your junk and rubbish. Throw away old and unwanted newspaper, toys and books.

Use light colors for painting of your walls. This makes the room look bigger too.You want proportion in your layout of furniture. You want to be able to entertain as many guests as possible. Create several seating areas by gathering a few chairs and a small table for each seating area. Small groups of people can gather for casual chit chat and small talk. If there is only one sofa suite then only one person is the focus of attention and less participation is possible among the guests. Make sure the coffee table is within easy reach of the armchairs and sofas. Do put end tables and side tables next to chairs as well. Guests can reach their food and drinks, reading material and perhaps TV remote controls. You don't have to incur huge expenditure to update your living room decor. One simple trick is to re-arrange your furniture and presto, it seems like a new living room. Painting fresh coat of paint is relatively cheap too.

The Cholesterol Conspiracy - The Truth About Statins And Nutritional Supplementation

"All truth passes through three stages.

First, it is ridiculed.

Second, it is violently opposed.

Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."

Arthur Schopenhauer

(1788 - 1860)

What is the true cause of heart disease, and how can we truly reduce the risk of death?

Atherosclerosis, or Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), is the leading cause of death in both men and women. In the U.S. alone, there are more than one million heart attacks every year, one third of them resulting in death. The majority of men and women currently have, or are actively developing, atherosclerosis. By age 20, most people already have a 15-25% narrowing of their arteries due to plaque formation. By age 40, there is a 30-50% clogging of their arteries.

In the beginning of the Twentieth Century, congestive heart disease (CHD) was mostly a result of rheumatic fever, which was a childhood disease. However by the year 1936 there was a dramatic change in the main cause of heart disease. Cardiovascular disease caused by atherosclerosis, or plaque buildup, took first place as the primary cause of heart disease, making congestive heart failure a distant second.

During the 1950's, the autopsies conducted on men who died of heart disease that revealed plaque-clogged arteries concluded that cholesterol was the cause of hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and coronary artery disease. Cholesterol, not calcium, was considered the "cause" of heart disease, despite plaque consisting of 95% calcium and a relatively small percentage of cholesterol. By 1956 there were 600,000 deaths annually from heart disease in the U.S. Of those 600,000, 90% were caused by atherosclerosis, or clogged arteries. In fewer than 25 years, the number one cause of death in the U.S. had changed dramatically ...from congestive heart disease to coronary artery disease.

Because cholesterol was dubbed the "cause" of atherosclerosis, the effort to lower cholesterol by any means began in earnest. Both the food industry and the pharmaceutical industry seized upon this opportunity to cash in on a cholesterol-lowering campaign by creating foods and drugs that would supposedly save lives. Diets, such as the Prudent Diet, were established to lower the amount of cholesterol intake from food. There was no doubt that both polyunsaturated oils and drugs reduced cholesterol, but by 1966 it was also apparent that lowering cholesterol did not translate into a reduced risk of death from heart disease.

As there was so much money to be made from pharmaceutical development, the campaign to produce cholesterol-lowering drugs kicked into high gear, despite the lack of evidence showing that the lowering cholesterol reduced the risk of untimely death from heart disease.

Heart disease kills 725,000 Americans annually, with women accounting for 2/3 or nearly 500,000 of those deaths. After thirty years of cholesterol-lowering medications' failure to significantly lower the death rate from cardiovascular disease, in 1987 a new and more dangerous class of drugs was unleashed upon the world: the "statin" drugs. Cholesterol-lowering statin drugs are now the standard of care that physicians are indoctrinated into prescribing to reduce cardiovascular disease. Are statin drugs the best way to prevent heart attacks and death?

Before 1936 the most common type of heart disease was congestive heart disease (CHD). It rarely caused sudden death and could be treated with the drug digitalis. The incidence of CHD remained stable until 1987, after which the incidence of the disease skyrocketed. Interestingly, the timing of the increased incidence of congestive heart disease coincides with the introduction of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs. Could cholesterol-lowering statin drugs have something to do with the weakening of heart muscles and the increased incidence of congestive heart failure? We will see that lowering the body's co-enzyme Q10 levels, a side effect of statin drugs, does indeed increase the risk of muscle damage, including the muscles of the heart.

Atherosclerosis is a disease characterized primarily by inflammation of the arterial lining caused by oxidative damage from homocysteine, a toxic amino acid intermediary found in everyone. Homocsyteine, in combination with other free radicals and toxins, oxidizes arteries, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, which in turn releases C Reactive Protein (CRP) from the liver-a marker of an inflammatory response within the arteries. Inflammation (oxidation) is the beginning of plaque buildup and ultimately, cardiovascular disease. Plaque, combined with the thickening of arterial smooth muscles, arterial spasms, and clotting, puts a person at a high risk of suffering heart attack or stroke.

For years, doctors have hyper-focused on cholesterol levels. First it was the total cholesterol; later the focus became the ratio of "good" HDL cholesterol to "bad" LDL cholesterol. In other words, how much of your cholesterol was good, and how much was bad? Of the two, the important parameter is the level of HDL cholesterol, not LDL cholesterol. HDL, or high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, is responsible for clearing out the LDL cholesterol that sticks to arterial walls. Exercise, vitamins, minerals, and other antioxidants, particularly the bioflavonoid and olive polyphenol antioxidants, increase HDL cholesterol levels and protect the LDL cholesterol from oxidative damage, and therefore do more to reduce the risk of heart disease than any medication ever could.

There is nothing inherently bad about LDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol is critical to maintain life. LDL cholesterol only becomes "bad" when it is damaged, or oxidized by free radicals. Only the damaged, or oxidized form of LDL cholesterol sticks to the arterial walls to initiate the formation of plaque.

Let us look towards cigarette smoking for a simple example demonstrating that we really need to reduce oxidized LDL cholesterol to prevent atherosclerosis, as opposed to indiscriminately lowering LDL cholesterol with statin drugs. Everyone knows that cigarette smoking increases the risk of many chronic diseases, such as cancer, heart disease, and stroke. Smokers with normal levels of LDL cholesterol are at an even greater risk of developing heart disease than a non-smoker who has elevated levels of LDL cholesterol. Of course the reason why a smoker with normal levels of LDL cholesterol is at greater risk of disease is because his LDL gets excessively oxidized.

Cigarette smoke releases so many toxins and free radicals that the LDL cholesterol, the triglycerides, and the arterial walls are extensively oxidized. Homocysteine levels are also increased by cigarette smoking which further oxidizes LDL cholesterol and the arterial lining. Oxidation is the initiating cause of atherosclerosis. Therefore, the more and longer one smokes, the more oxidative damage he sustains and the greater his risk of developing heart disease. The degree of oxidation directly corresponds to the risk of heart disease.

If you are not taking vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants then your LDL cholesterol is being oxidized, it is sticking to your arterial walls, and you ARE developing heart disease EVEN IF YOUR CHOLESTEROL LEVELS ARE NORMAL! LDL cholesterol starts sticking to arterial walls before the age of 5.

Among the many free radicals that damage cholesterol, triglycerides and the arterial lining is homocysteine, a toxic intermediate biochemical produced during the conversion of the amino acid methionine into another important amino acid, cysteine. Both methionine and cysteine are non-toxic, but homocysteine is very toxic to the lining of the arterial endothelium. Homocysteine oxidizes LDL cholesterol, triglycerides and the arterial lining.

Homocysteine is an amino acid normally produced in small amounts from the amino acid methionine. The normal role of homocysteine in the body is to control growth and support bone and tissue formation. However a problem arises when homocysteine levels in the body are elevated, causing excessive damage to LDL cholesterol, as well as to arteries. Furthermore, homocysteine actually stimulates growth of arteriosclerotic plaque, which leads to heart disease.

Thyroid hormone controls the level of homocysteine, but numerous factors play a role in the elevation of homocysteine. Normal aging, kidney failure, smoking, some medications, and industrial toxins all elevate homocysteine levels. Interestingly, estrogen helps lower homocysteine.

Homocysteine becomes elevated in the blood with a deficiency of the B vitamins-B6, B12 and folic acid. Genetics also play a role. About 12% of the population has an undetected defect requiring higher levels of folic acid than the rest of population to help maintain homocysteine levels in a safe range (below 6.5). Therefore if you have high homocysteine levels (> 7.0) even though you are taking supplemental B complex vitamins, then you may be among the 12% who need more than 1000 mcg of folic acid per day. In addition, betaine, also known as trimethylglycine (TMG) lowers homocysteine.

Homocysteine is second only to cigarette smoking in its oxidative destruction. It causes small nicks or tears in the arterial lining, while also oxidizing and damaging LDL cholesterol. The damaged, or oxidized LDL cholesterol sticks to the homocysteine-damaged areas of the arterial lining. The combination of oxidized LDL cholesterol and a damaged arterial lining is what causes LDL cholesterol to stick to the arteries, whether or not the LDL cholesterol level is normal.

Cholesterol-lowering statin drugs are the standard for treating high cholesterol. This is dogma, and anyone who states otherwise is committing medical heresy. Many people find it hard to believe that pharmaceutical companies could ever succeed in paying medical researchers, medical associations, and doctors to recommend something detrimental to our health.

Most people do not know that pharmaceutical companies fund medical institutions, medical education, medical conferences, and still reward doctors and research institutions for providing favorable results on their drugs. Likewise, pharmaceutical companies often suppress negative results from studies done on their drugs. Money has the power to sweep negative results and serious side effects under the rug. Money has the power to influence the FDA to decide which drugs make it to market and which drugs become the "standard" of treatment.

Former editor of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), Dr. Marcia Angell, warned of the problem of commercializing scientific research in her outgoing editorial titled "Is Academic Medicine for Sale?" Angell called for stronger restrictions on pharmaceutical stock ownership and other financial incentives for researchers. She said that growing conflicts of interest were tainting science, warning "When the boundaries between industry and academic medicine become as blurred as they are now, the business goals of industry influence the mission of medical schools in multiple ways." She did not discount the benefits of research but said, "a Faustian bargain" now existed between medical schools and the pharmaceutical industry. Angell left the NEJM in June 2000 and has written a book, "The Truth About the Drug Companies: How They Deceive Us and What to Do About It."

Two years later, in June 2002, the NEJM announced that it was going to begin accepting articles that were written by biased researchers, as there weren't enough unbiased researchers left to write articles. In other words, most research institutions were now funded by one or more of the numerous pharmaceutical companies.

An ABC report noted that a survey of clinical trials revealed that when a drug company did not fund a study, favorable results regarding a drug were found only 50% of the time. In studies funded by drug companies favorable results about the drugs were reported an amazing 90% of the time. Money can and does buy the desired results. This is how most medical research and drugs are now developed and brought to market.

In 1977, the internationally-renowned heart surgeon, Dr. Michael DeBakey pointed out that only 30-40% of people with blocked arteries and heart disease have elevated blood cholesterol levels, and posed the logical question, "How do you explain the other 60-70%?"

Because lowering cholesterol did not reduce the risk of death from heart disease, the Cholesterol Consensus Conference in 1984 developed new guidelines to lower the "acceptable level" of cholesterol. High cholesterol would now be the diagnosis for any man or woman with a cholesterol level over 200. Doctors had to convince their patients that they had the disease and needed to take one or more expensive drugs for the rest of their lives.

However, when lowering total cholesterol levels below 200 did not translate into saving lives from heart attacks, the focus then turned to LDL cholesterol levels. The "disease" of high cholesterol was refined to the disease of high LDL cholesterol. The unfortunate patient who had an LDL cholesterol level above 130 was now condemned to a lifetime of expensive drugs. Though completely illogical, even when a person with normal LDL cholesterol levels suffered a heart attack, he would still be prescribed a cholesterol-lowering drug.

As we shall see, statin drugs reduce the risk of death by repeat heart attacks by as much as 30%, but interestingly enough, the mechanism of action in reducing the risk of death after a heart attack is not via statin drugs' ability to lower cholesterol! It has been discovered that statin drugs have a modest anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect. Yet, there are many natural antioxidants that reduce inflammation and oxidation of LDL cholesterol and the lining of the arteries, which may soon be discovered to be more effective in reducing the risk of death than "antioxidant drugs," without toxic side effects.

The myth that high LDL cholesterol is the primary cause of heart disease, and that we must be on drugs to protect ourselves is dispelled by the evidence. If the premise were true that people with high levels of LDL cholesterol get heart disease, then we could assume that people with normal levels of LDL should not get heart disease, or at least very few should get it. However, as Dr. DeBakey observed, approximately 60% of those who die from heart disease have normal LDL cholesterol levels!

Furthermore, after over 45 years of doctors prescribing cholesterol-lowering drugs, heart disease and stroke still remain the number one cause of death in both women and men. This says that regardless of whether you have a high or a normal level of cholesterol, you have a 50% chance of dying from heart disease. If this is so, and it is, then why take a dangerous drug to attempt to lower your cholesterol in the first place?

In 2001, the target level of LDL cholesterol was lowered from 130 to 100, and overnight the number of people considered to be candidates for cholesterol statin drugs doubled. Many people such as myself bristled at the news, because we knew the effectiveness of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in preventing and reversing heart disease. Many of us could see the conspiracy for what it was.

The level at which LDL cholesterol is considered normal has continually been influenced by pharmaceutical companies, who pull the financial strings of research grants that keep medical schools and medical organizations in business. The lower they can establish the level at which LDL cholesterol is considered to be normal, the more people automatically become victims of the dreaded disease of "high cholesterol." Therefore, more people will be persuaded that they need to be taking a statin drug, and voilà, more profit for the manufacturers. When you consider the size of the profits already received, let alone the potential profit from statin drugs over the next several years, the cholesterol conspiracy is one of the largest money making schemes ever perpetrated on the world.

In July 2004, the level of LDL cholesterol considered normal underwent another change. The new norm plunged from 100 to 70, virtually doubling again the number of people who are "infected" with the plague of high cholesterol. Why, it's the epidemic of our time! Many enlightened people howled at this news, wondering if the masses would ever wake up and see who is behind this, and why. Why is the medical establishment ignoring the thousands of published medical studies that show the beneficial effects of nutritional supplements against heart disease? Why is the medical establishment down-playing the dangerous and deadly side effects of statin drugs?

The "updated" LDL cholesterol recommendations were published in the July 2004 issue of the American Heart Association's publication, Circulation. A panel from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, a division of the National Institutes of Health, which is endorsed by the American College of Cardiology, and the American Heart Association, were the ones who actually pronounced the new cholesterol level at which drugs should be prescribed. Sounds pretty official and reliable if these powerful medical institutions are backing up these recommendations, right?

The fact is eight of the nine panel members making the new LDL cholesterol recommendations were being paid by the statin-producing pharmaceutical companies. The panelists did not disclose their financial conflict of interest. This information was uncovered by Newsday, a Long Island, New York
newspaper (D. Ricks and R. Robins, Newsday, July 15, 2004). Seven of the nine panelists have financial connections to Pfizer, the makers of Lipitor®. Five of the nine served as "consultants" to Pfizer. So, what did the other two panelists do to deserve their money? Seven of the nine panelists also received money from Merck, the producers of Zocor®, with four of them serving as "consultants" to the company. Eight of the panelists who made the recommendations that would increase the prescribing of statin drugs have received either research grants or honoraria from Pfizer, Merck, AstraZeneca, Novartis, Glaxo Smith Kline, Johnson & Johnson, Bayer, and many other drug companies that produce statin drugs.

You would think that with all the advertising and recommendations from medical experts on the benefits of statin drugs, the medical community would possess overwhelming evidence that the drugs reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease. A hint of some of the smoke and mirrors in the pharmaceutical companies' advertising can be seen in their TV commercials. Read carefully the small print on some of Crestor's® commercial advertising. Their commercial states how much it lowers LDL cholesterol. However, in the same ad you can read, "...Crestor® has not been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease or heart attack." If so, then why take it? Isn't the bottom line to prevent death?

The system for reporting adverse effects from medications is tremendously flawed, so much so that many people are seriously harmed or killed by some medications before they are finally removed from the market. Most doctors do not know what symptoms or effects are due to the drug, what should be reported, or even to whom to report adverse effects. They assume that the research that went into developing the drug has already identified all the effects and that a drug brought to market is "safe." However, only one in twenty side effects is ever reported to either hospital administrators or the FDA.

Statin drugs block cholesterol production in the body by inhibiting the enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase in the early steps of its synthesis in the mevalonate pathway. Cholesterol is one of three end products in the mevalonate chain. This same biosynthetic pathway is also used to create co-enzyme Q10, or co-Q10, as well as dilochol. Therefore, one unfortunate consequence of statin drugs is the unintentional inhibition of both Co-Q10 and dilochol synthesis.

The drug information insert of a statin drug states that it lowers co-enzyme Q10 levels. Most doctors have forgotten their biochemistry class in medical school, and forgotten about the importance of Co-Q10. Therefore they apparently are not concerned about such a statement on the drug labeling information sheet. They may even reassure their patients that lowering Co-Q10 is nothing to worry about, but at the same time warn them that the drug may cause liver damage and to have their liver enzymes checked every three to six months to make sure the drug isn't killing them. They do not realize that it is the depletion of Co-Q10 that leads to liver damage and death.

Ubiquinone, or co-enzyme Q10, is a critical cellular nutrient created in the cell's mitochondria, the "engines" that produce energy for the cell. Mitochondria use sugar, oxygen, and water to produce energy molecules known as ATP. Without ATP cells could do nothing. Damaged tissues could not be repaired. Cells could not divide or produce or utilize proteins, enzymes, or hormones. Death of cells, and indeed of the human body would occur if ATP could no longer be produced and utilized. Co-Q10 functions within the mitochondria as an electron carrier to cytochrome oxidase, our main respitory enzyme, which helps turn oxygen and sugar into energy. The heart requires high levels of oxygen, sugar, and Co-Q10 since it utilizes a lot of energy. A form of Co-Q10 called ubiquinone is found in all cell membranes, where it plays a role in maintaining membrane integrity, so critical to nerve conduction and muscle contraction. Co-Q10 is also vital for the formation of elastin and collagen, which make up the connective tissues of the skin, musculature, and the cardiovascular system.

The most common side effect of statin drugs is muscle pain and weakness. In fact, many patients who start on the statin drugs almost immediately notice generalized fatigue and muscle weakness. This is due to the depletion of Co-Q10 needed to support muscle function. Dr. Beatrice Golomb of San Diego, California, is currently conducting a series of studies on statin side effects. The pharmaceutical industry insists that only 2-3% of patients get muscle aches and cramps, when in fact in one study, Golomb found that 98% of patients taking Lipitor®, and one-third of the patients taking Mevacor® (a lower dose statin), suffered noticeable to significant muscle problems.

Some people on statin drugs lose coordination of their muscles. Some develop pain in their muscles, some are not able to write due to loss of fine motor skills. Many lose the strength to exercise. Others are falling more frequently as their muscles give out, still others have trouble sleeping due to muscle cramping and twitching. Even worse, many people are experiencing most of these side effects. The problems are so numerous, it is difficult to list all the symptoms people might experience. These problems do not come from the "disease" of high cholesterol, but the disease of ignorance in prescribing these drugs.

As we age, Co-Q10 levels decline naturally. From the age of 20 to 80, Co-Q10 levels fall by nearly 50%. Along with the natural decline of Co-Q10, comes a natural decrease in energy and an increase in the risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer. If the natural decline of Co-Q10 levels increases the risk of fatigue, cancer, heart disease, and stroke, would it not make sense that accelerating the decline of Co-Q10 levels with statin drugs would have the same effect? They do indeed!

Demonstrating the importance of Co-Q10 to cardiovascular health, in a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled study of people either taking or not taking statin drugs, supplementation with Co-Q10 reduced the risk of heart attacks and death in those with heart disease and prior heart attacks by 50%, regardless of whether they were on a statin drug or not. (Singh R, Neki N, Kartikey K, et al. Effect of coenzyme Q10 on risk of atherosclerosis in patients with recent myocardial infarction. Mol Cell Biochem. 2003 Apr; 246(1-2):75-82.)

Additionally, Co-Q10 was shown to increase blood levels of vitamin E and significantly increase the levels of protective HDL. As low HDL is a major risk factor for heart disease, increasing it is a definite benefit. Statin drugs were shown not to provide any benefit beyond that of supplementing with Co-Q10. Let me make this clear - in this study only the co-enzyme Q10 provided any benefit, not the drugs!

Cardiologist Dr. Peter Langsjoen of East Texas University reported the effects of Lipitor® among 20 patients who started with completely normal hearts. After six months on a low dose of 20 mg of Lipitor® per day, two thirds of the patients started to show signs of heart failure, as seen by abnormalities in the heart's filling phase. According to Dr. Langsjoen, this malfunction is due to Co-Q10 depletion. Nine controlled trials using statin drugs in humans have been conducted thus far. Eight of these showed significant statin-induced Co-Q10 depletion leading to a decline in left ventricular function and other biochemical imbalances.

In the United States, the incidence of heart attacks over the past ten to fifteen years has declined slightly. But congestive heart failure and cardiomyopathy have risen alarmingly. Is it a coincidence that statin drugs were first marketed in 1987, and then from 1989 to 1997, deaths from congestive heart failure more than doubled? 38 It scares me that virtually all patients with heart failure are put on statin drugs, even if their cholesterol is already low. In my opinion, the worst thing to do for a failing heart is take a statin drug. The best thing is to take is a full range of quality nutritional supplements, ...vitamins, minerals, fish oil, and other antioxidants, including Co-Q10.

Various antioxidants work synergistically, each contributing to the fight against free radicals in different areas and in different ways. In the blood stream, water-soluble antioxidants, such as vitamin C, and grape seed extract come in contact with and neutralize free radicals before they damage LDL-cholesterol. Other antioxidants saturate arterial walls and other tissues, and protect collagen and elastic fibers from free radical damage, reducing inflammation and plaque formation. The fat-soluble antioxidants, vitamin E, beta carotene, and co-enzyme Q10 ride along in the blood fat (triglycerides) and LDL cholesterol, protecting them and the endothelium from oxidation. Vitamin E sits on the surface of LDL cholesterol, protecting it from free radical damage. Beta carotene, grape seed extract and olive extract penetrate deeper inside the LDL cholesterol and arterial walls, adding more protection from oxidation. Quercetin and alpha lipoic acid work through nitrous oxide pathways to reduce high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease.

A report published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2005 looked at 97 double-blind controlled studies comparing the efficacy of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs to fish oil. They found that cholesterol-lowering statin drugs reduced the risk of death from heart disease by only 13%, and
interesting enough it was NOT due to the effect of lowering cholesterol. The benefits, although small, were derived from the fact that statin drugs have a slight antioxidant effect.

Even more interesting, the salmon oil was shown to reduce the risk of death from heart disease by 23%, nearly double the benefit of statin drugs. Salmon oil is an omega-3 fatty acid that gets incorporated into cholesterol and triglycerides and prevents the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Since LDL cholesterol is protected from excessive oxidation there is less plaque buildup and less risk of heart disease.

Inflammation is a well-known component in the formation of atherosclerosis. To keep it simple, think of inflammation and oxidation as the same process. The immune system's response to inflammation is to
release peroxides that act like acid to break down damaged tissues, so that cells from the immune system, macrophages, can consume the molecules and clean up the site. But peroxides escalate the oxidation/inflammation process, thus damaging more tissue. The arterial walls become more inflamed, escalating the formation of plaque and scarring. The downward cycle continues until atherosclerosis is so advanced that the occurrence of a heart attack or stroke becomes imminent.

The liver's response to inflammation is to release C reactive protein (CRP) into the blood. Other inflammatory causes can cause elevated CRP levels, including cigarette smoking, obesity, insulin insensitivity, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, infections, dementia, colorectal cancer, high blood pressure, and aging. Accordingly, elevated CRP levels are a direct indication of inflammation in the body and that atherosclerosis, including heart disease, is actively developing.

Homocysteine and high sensitivity CRP levels can and should be tested. Dr. Jialal, of the Universtity of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, is well known for his research correlating oxidized LDL cholesterol as the true cause of atherosclerosis, has also identified high sensitivity C reactive protein as a predictive risk factor for inflammation of arterial walls and plaque formation. Your doctor may not test for these routinely, but you should insist on getting these tests done. Both of these predictive values can be kept at "safe" levels. Vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and omega-3 fatty acids can lower the levels of homocysteine and CRP. The B vitamins, along with betaine, or tri-methyl-glycine (TMG), change homocysteine into safer amino acids and reduce inflammation of the LDL cholesterol and the arterial lining.

When you receive the results of your homocysteine test, do not accept the answer, "Your test was normal." Ask for the actual number. The doctor and nurse usually know what is normal by what the lab slip states as the "normal range." Most lab results report a normal homocysteine level as being below 10.4, when in fact, since the early 1990's, researchers have known that a homocysteine count above 6.5 signals a rapid linear rise in the risk for heart disease.

Furthermore, with every 3 point elevation of homocysteine above 6.5, e.g., when homocysteine levels are 9.5, the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) rises by an additional 35%! Yet you may be told that 9.5 is "normal and not to worry." With a homocysteine level of 12.5, the increase in the
risk for heart disease exceeds 70%. The greater the homocysteine level, the greater the oxidation
of both LDL cholesterol and the arterial lining. The greater the inflammation, the higher the CRP. Is it any wonder that homocysteine and CRP levels are more predictive for risk of heart disease than cholesterol levels and ratios?

I need to emphasize that anyone whether they have a medical problem or not, should discuss this information with their physician before acting upon anything written here. The information provided is not meant to diagnose or treat any disease. It is for informational purposes only; and no one should make decisions about their medications without consulting with their physician. No one should come off a cholesterol-lowering statin drug in lieu of nutritional supplements without a thorough discussion with their physician who is keenly aware of all the pros and cons of both treatment modalities.

In summary, I recommend a full spectrum of quality nutritional supplements, along with a healthy diet and exercise, to help obtain and maintain optimal heart and arterial health. I believe all would agree that lifestyle changes are the most important factor for optimal health, ...and many believe that quality nutritional supplements are key in protecting against the process that leads to, and accelerates the development of almost all chronic degenerative diseases, that of oxidation. To combat oxidation we need a full range of quality antioxidants.
