Living in a Multicultural America

Megatrends Europe by Adjiedj Bakas, is one of my favorite books. This is an eye-opening book to read. It shows you how the environment that you know today may be very different in the not too distant future.

Although Bakas will not say what life is like in the coming years, he shows you how to pay attention to current trends in society. Of course, there are two reasons why you need to do this:
If you're in business, it is always good, as one of the first to know about all new trends in your market.
If you are in international business, it is easier to understand the different cultures present and possible trends for the future.

NPR kicks off one months multiculturalism

Last Friday, a month long series on multiculturalism, which began on the American National Public Radio NPR. NPR produces and distributes non-commercial news, talk, entertainment and programming.

This first episode is 16 minutes long audio name:

Ronald Takaki, professor emeritus of folklore at the University of California at Berkeley
Jen Chau, Founder and Managing Director of Swirl, a national multi-ethnic organization

Current thinking on the "Heritage

Of course it's play for the Americans, of course, about multiculturalism:
First black president
Expanding global economy

Multiculturalism - a shift in the importance

The program looks like Barak Obama and Tiger Woods on their mixed heritage.

But what I found interesting was the question of whether young people a different definition of the word "multicultural" than the older generations.

Now the differences in the importance of a common occurrence in intercultural communication. It takes no longer than a few months in a foreign country, before you know that people have verydifferent meanings for certain words.

A trend to watch

A shift in the perception of what actually does multiculturalism, is interesting in different age groups in a country.
How will this shift impact society?
How will this impact international business?

It gets even more interesting by following this trend to see where it leads. It is not easy to predict what things will look like in the future.

Like Bakas points out in mega -Trends in Europe, several factors affect how our society evolved.

If you look at this shift in perception of multiculturalism alone, you will only see a small picture, as it impacts society.
Other social and economic changes can also impact of multiculturalism in America

And together with these other factors that could shift in the perception of multiculturalism, international business impact.
